If you aren't a skilled bargainer, then merchant might not be the profession for you. You could possibly work as a mercenary, offering to protect weaker players on their quests, but there are so many people around that you are hardly likely to find someone willing to pay you for this.
While you will have a hard time finding someone to pay you for protection, there are plenty of people who will willingly pay a fair amount for a useful item. There are many ways to produce items that people want, such as tailoring, and it should not be too hard to find someone willing to pay you for your work.
